The safety of dental treatment is a common concern for pregnant women. Routine examination and professional teeth cleaning are not only safe but also extremely necessary during this period since changed hormonal levels during pregnancy can lead to oedema, bleeding gums, entrapment of food in the interdental spaces and further inflammation.
Other procedures, such as dental caries treatment and orthopaedic treatment, are also recommended. After all, such problems are a potential focus of inflammation and source of infection.
However, teeth whitening and other manipulations affecting only aesthetics should be postponed until the end of pregnancy.
Anaesthesia during dental procedures should also be mentioned.
Though there are drugs that are allowed to be used for anaesthesia on pregnant women, the treatment procedures requiring anaesthesia preferably should be carried out in the second trimester due to the peculiarities of the pregnancy.
